Troubled Caernarfon Town achieved their escape from relegation, after weeks of growing concern, by means of a first-minute goal that was enough to earn precious points at Aberystwyth's expense. Left-winger James Thomas was the early sharp-shooter, who converted the 10-yards' gift, created by John Rowley as the visiting defence were caught napping.
On a heavy pitch, both teams found it impossible to produce their normal flowing play but Caernarfon adapted much better and had other chances to secure a comfortable lead. Rowley steered an effort into the side netting from close range, Bobby Jones forced 'keeper Dave Jones to save down at a post and Thomas swept a 15-yarder off target.
Aberystwyth, whose Robert Evans blazed a 25-yarder wide, hoped centre-back Aneurin Thomas would deliver in set piece situations but he miscued with three close-range headers. During added time, Caernarfon should have doubled their authority but Phil Doran, after beating three opponents, fired against Aberystwyth's Matthew Roberts on the goal line.
