Hayes resurrects Bala as Lakesiders get first win in five

Gap to Newtown closes to two points ahead of final weekend

Newtown 2-3 Bala Town

Mike Hayes grabbed the winner for Bala Town as Colin Caton's side got their first win in five matches with a 3-2 victory over Newtown.

Hayes latched onto a long clearance from Sean Smith before slotting low past Dave Jones to cap the Lakesiders' comeback from 2-1 down.

The visitors had gone in front in the fifth minute, Chris Venables turning home Henry Jones' free-kick from the left.

Newtown responded and looked to have equalised midway through the half, Nick Rushton converting from a corner, but a foul in the build up saw the goal chalked off.

Minutes later though the Robins were level, Steve Leslie profiting from the concession of a cheap free-kick to fire past Keighan Jones in the Bala goal.

Rushton then did get his goal shortly after, capping off a swift counter attack to put the Robins in front.

Bala dug in though and were level before half time, Venables again with the goal, heading home another Jones cross.

A twenty-five yard strike from Jones that was well saved by his namesake in the Newtown goal was the closest either side had come to breaking the deadlock after the restart, before Hayes pounced to give Bala the win, only their second of Phase 2, and their third in all competitions since the turn of the year.
